Our Maternity Unit at Hurstville Private consists of a 5 bed Delivery Suite, 22 bed Postnatal Unit and a Level 2 Special Care Nursery.
In January 2009, our Brand New Special Care Nursery was opened and has become undoubtedly the most modern and warm nursery in Sydney.
2009 has also seen 2 additional Brand New state of the art patient rooms added to our Postnatal Unit with work underway to extensive renovate the reminder of our Postnatal Unit and Delivery Suites.

Our Maternity Facilities
In 2008 Hurstville Private commenced extensive renovations to upgrade its Maternity Unit and Surgical Units.
The results are extraordinary.
Delivery Suite
Our 5 Delivery Suites provides a bright, comfortable and safe space for your birthing needs. Where highly experienced midwives are there to guide and support you through labour and the birth of your baby.
Each of our Delivery Suites include:
- Television
- Large private ensuite with bath
- Private newborn resuscitation area
- Comfortable lounge / sofa bed
- Flexible birthing bed
- Fetal monitoring system
Special Care
Our brand new state of the art Special Care Nursery was completed in January 2009. We have expanded to accommodate 8 babies that need that little bit more extra care.
Our special Care Nursery is supported by a team of specialist neonatal intensive care trained nurses, specialist paediatricians and the latest technology to delivery the greatest of care for your baby.
Postnatal Unit
Our postnatal unit is situated on the first floor of the hospital with views of surrounding Hurstville.
We have a combination of single and double rooms that delivers the warmest, welcoming and safe atmosphere for you and your baby.
Hurstville Private is known to be the leading hospital in providing excellence in Maternity care. We only have the most highly qualified and experienced combination of Certified Midwives, Lactation Consultations and Mothercraft Nurses, delivering quality care to our patients and families.
Booking Into Our Maternity Unit
At your first appointment with your chosen obstetrician they will provide you with the necessary paperwork to book into our hospital. We require that you submit all necessary paperwork directly to the hospital no later than 4 months prior to your expected date of confinement. Upon receievement of your paperwork, Hurstville Private will send you a letter of confirmation that secures your admission into our Hospital.
If you are a member of a health fund it is most important that prior to your admission you confirm your level of cover. Suggested questions to ask your health fund are:
- What is my level of cover called
- Would this level cover me for my pregnancy
- Do I have an excess
- Do I have a co-payment
- If my baby was admitted into the Special Care Nursery, would the baby be covered under this membership
- Will the baby have any excess or co-payment
- If my baby required a transfer to a level 3 Nursery would the baby be covered
While you are speaking with your fund, we suggest you check how your cover will assist you with the other expenses you will occur such as:
- Obstetricians fees
- Pediatricians fees
- Anaesthetist fees
- Pathology fees
If you have a self insured patient, you will be quotes an Estimate of Fees when you present your admission paperwork to our Maternity Admission Officer.

Education Program
Hurstville Private offers a range of information education program for all parents who have chosen to have their baby here. All sessions are hosted by Certified Midwives, Lactation Consultants and Mothercraft Nurses who work within the Maternity Unit.
In order to gain the most out of these classes, we keep class sizes small.
Due to the popularity of our Childbirth and Parenting Classes, we suggest you book into classes as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

Tuesday Sessions , Run over 5 consecutive weeks - 7am to 9.30pm
Saturday Sessions, Run over 2 consecutive weeks - 9am to 1pm
Our Childbirth and Parenting classe aims to help mothers to be and their partners understand their pregnancy, delivery and the transition into parenting.

Postnatal classes
At Hurstville private we conduct a series of classes through your stay. We recommend that all out Mother’s attend these classes during their stay.
Classes include:

When to present to Hospital
When you think your are in labour / if your membranes rupture / if you have any bleeding / if you have a decrease in baby movements / if your are experiencing regular painful contractions / if your are experiencing any of the above and are under 37 weeks pregnant, please phone Delivery suite on 9579-7731 prior to presenting and speak with a Midwife.

We advise you not to bring unnecessary valuables.
Maternity Visiting Hours
In Delivery Suite
Please advise your family and friends that no visiting is allowed whilst you are Delivery Suite. You may elect to have up to two support people with you during labour (your partner and one other). Please be advised that these two support people are not interchangeable during labour. Visitors are encouraged to visit only when you have been moved to the postnatal unit and within the visiting hours. Visitors outside of these visiting hours will be deterred.
In Postnatal Unit
Please remind your visitors that maternity visiting hours are strictly between 2pm to 4.30pm and 6pm to 8pm, daily.
All visitors will be deterred outside of these hours. No exceptions will be granted.
Partners only are welcome up till 8pm daily.
In Special Care Nursery
If your baby is admitted into our Special Care Nursery, you and your partner are welcome anythime.
If you intend to have grandparnets and the baby’s siblings visit, please advise them of our visiting hours of 2pm to 4.30pm and 6pm to 8pm, and our limit of one visitor at a time.
During the following hours of 6.30am to 7am, 1.30pm to 2pm and 9pm to 9.30pm, we request that no visitng occurs in our Nursery during the staff handover period in order to respect and maintain the privacy of our little patients.
Rooming In
Hurstville Private is in the process of being accredited as a Baby Friendly Hospital under the Australian Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative, as recognized by the Australian College of Midwives Incorporated, Commonwealth Department of Health and Aging and the World Health Organization (WHO).
With this in mind Hurstville Private has long since established a Rooming In Policy. Rooming In allows a mother and baby to remain together 24 hours a day, thus promoting bonding, build confidence with parenting skills, encourage lactation and allows a mother to increase her knowledge of her baby's behaviour and routine.
Information for Visitors
Maternity Visiting Hours
Maternity visiting hours are between 2pm to 4.30pm and 6pm to 8pm, daily
All visitors other than partners will be deterred. Please avoid disappointment by planning your visit around these times, as exceptions will not be granted, as we valve our patients rest with the highest regard.
Maternity Tours
Every Saturday Hurstville Private welcomes you to come along for a tour of Our Maternity Unit at 10am.
Your host will be one of our warm and friendly midwives, whom will guide you through Delivery Suite and Postnatal, with a quick peep into our Special Care Nursery. We welcome any questions you may have regarding our hospital and maternity unit.

Length of Stay
You will be expected to be discharged home:
- After 4 nights following a vaginal delivery and
- After 5 nights following a caesarean section.
- You may be discharge home earlier if you wish in consultation with your obstetrician.
- Upon discharge, you will be made aware of your follow up appointment with your obstetrician and your baby’s follow up appointment with the paediatrician.
- You will also be given contact details of your nearest early childhood centre.
- Please be advised that a member of maternity staff will telephone you approximately 6 weeks post discharge to check on your progress and enquire about your care.
Discharge
When planning your return home it is important to consider your needs for the following areas:
- Transport arrangements to return home and baby seat
- Going home outfit for your baby
You should ask your doctor and nursing staff to assist you in identifying what your restrictions and needs may be.
Please ensure you take the following with you when discharged from hospital:
- personal belongings
- medications (if applicable)
- x-rays and scans
- flowers
