Hurstville Private has been providing excellence in Obstetric Services for 25 years.
Our commitment to continuing and excelling patient care is the focus of our experienced staff We are known for our unique approach to Maternity care, as well as the home like atmosphere we aim to create for you and your family.
Supporting families through their pregnancy, delivery and care of their newborns is our priority.
Our Delivery Suite complex comprises of (5) Delivery Suites supported by a (4) Operating Theatre complex should you require a caesarean section.
Post Delivery you will be transferred to level 1 where you will be accommodated in one of our 22 post natal beds.
Our Special Care Nursery is also located on level 1 so you will be in close proximity should your newborn require medical assistance in the early stages.

Each mother and newborn receive personalised healthcare from our team of experienced obstetricians, paediatricians, certified midwives, lactation consultants & mother craft nurses and our allied healthcare providers. This is the direct result of the unique collaboration that occurs within our Maternity Team, an attribute we are extremely proud of. This also includes 24hr on-site Resident Medical Officer and 24hr On Call Anaesthetic cover.

Maternity Tours
If you are still deciding or have decided to deliver your baby at our hospital please join us for a tour.
- Maternity unit tours are conducted every Saturday at 10am.
- Bookings are not required for our tours. Please present to the main reception area prior to 09.50am where you will be greeted by one of our experienced midwives.
- We welcome all/any questions you may have regarding our hospital and maternity service.
- The tour includes a visit to our Delivery Suite, Post Natal Unit and our Special Care Nursery.
Childbirth and Parenting Education Classes
Classes are aimed to assist new Mums and their partners understand their pregnancy, delivery and the transition into parenting. Our classes are open to all expectant parents. All classes are conducted by our qualified midwifery educators including our certified midwives, Lactation Consultants and our mothercraft nurses. Classes cover topics such as:
- Common discomforts in Pregnancy
- How your newborn develops
- Nutrition and exercise
- Labour and birth
- Role of the support person
- Variations in labour
- Obstetric interventions
- Medicated pain relief in labour
- Post natal recovery
- Breastfeeding – how it works /common problems and solutions

You have the option of choosing from the following times:
- Tuesday evening 7pm – 9.30pm for 5 consecutive weeks
- Saturday morning 9am – 1pm for 2 consecutive weeks
Due to the popularity of our Childbirth and Parenting Classes, we recommend you book into classes as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

Booking Into Our Maternity Unit
At your first appointment with your chosen obstetrician they will provide you with our hospital admission package. We strongly suggest this document is completed and forward to the hospital at least 4 months prior to your date of confinement. Hurstville Private will send you a letter of confirmation that secures your admission into our Hospital.
Admission forms can be forwarded to the hospital as follows:
- Hand delivered to our main reception either Monday – Friday 6am – 8pm or Saturday and Sunday 8am – 4pm.
- Hand delivered to our Maternity Admission Officer Level 1 Monday to Friday 8am to 4pm excluding public holidays.
- Post to Maternity Admission Officer – Hurstville Private 37 Gloucester Road, Hurstville NSW 2220.
Private Health Insurance
We strongly recommend all patients check and confirm with their fund their insurance status for Obstetric Services including:
- Obstetrician Fees
- Paediatrician Fees
- Anaesthetic Fees – if required
- Pathology Fees – if required
- Hospital associated costs
We suggest you also check the following:
- What is my level of cover called?
- Does this level cover pregnancy?
- Do I have an excess payment with my plan?
- Do I have a co-payment with my plan?
- Will my membership cover a baby admitted to Special Care Nursery?
- Will my baby incur an excess or co-payment?
- Is my baby covered should they require transfer to a level 3 nursery?
Self Insured Patient
You will be provided with an “Estimate of Fees” quote once we have received your admission papers. Our Maternity Admission Officer can answer any queries you may have regarding this matter on (02) 9579 7786. Payment is required 6 weeks prior to your expected date of delivery.
Admission To Hospital
- Do not hesitate to contact our midwife on (02) 9579 7731 if you think your are in labour / if your membranes rupture / if you have any bleeding / if you have a decrease in baby movements / if your are experiencing regular painful contractions / if your are experiencing any of the above and/or are under 37 weeks pregnant.
- Please phone ahead on (02) 9579 7731 prior to arriving to the hospital and speak with the midwife. Our midwives are available 24/7 to answer any enquiries you may have regarding your pregnancy, labour and the hospital.
- Contacting us prior to your arrival provides the opportunity for the midwife to assess your progress and prepare for your pending arrival.
- Entry to the hospital is via our main reception area; enter via the driveway access on 37 Gloucester Road.
- Afterhours you will be required to use the intercom system located on the wall outside our main reception area.

What not to bring
MONEY/JEWELLERY/VALUABLES
We recommend you leave all valuables such as jewellery and large amounts of cash at home as we cannot accept responsibility for lost or stolen property. We would suggest all excess payments or co-payments are paid immediately upon arrival to the hospital relieving you of carrying cash during your stay.
We also recommend you remove all nail polish.
Delivery Suite
Our 5 Delivery Suite complex provides a bright, comfortable and safe space for your birthing needs. Where experienced midwives are there to guide and support you through labour and the birth of your baby. You may elect to have up to two support people with you during labour (your partner and one other). Please be advised that these two support people are not interchangeable during labour.
Each of our Delivery Suites includes:
- Television
- Large private ensuite with bath
- Private newborn resuscitation area
- Comfortable lounge / sofa bed
- Flexible birthing bed
- Fetal monitoring system
Special Care Nursery
Our brand new state of the art Special Care Nursery was completed in January 2009. We have expanded to accommodate 8 babies.
Each newborn is provided with individual care to meet their needs during these early stages for promotion of growth and development.
Newborns are under the care of a paediatrician and cared for by neonatal intensive care trained nurses with access to the lastest technology.
Postnatal Unit
Our postnatal unit is situated on the first floor of the hospital with views extending south and west to the Blue Mountains.
We have a combination of single and double rooms that deliver the warmest, welcoming and safe environment for you and your baby.
Hurstville Private is known as a leading hospital in providing excellence in Maternity care due to the qualified and combined experience of our maternity staff which includes Certified Midwives, Lactation Consultants and Mothercraft Nurses.
Rooming In
- Hurstville Private is in the process of being accredited as a Baby Friendly Hospital under the Australian Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative, as recognized by the Australian College of Midwives Incorporated, Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing and the World Health Organization (WHO).
- With this in mind Hurstville Private has long since established a Rooming In Policy. Rooming In allows a mother and baby to remain together 24 hours a day, thus promoting bonding, building confidence with parenting skills, encourages lactation and allows a mother to increase her knowledge of her baby’s behavior and routine.
Postnatal Classes
We provide a series of classes during your stay which we recommend all Mother’s attend as these classes are designed for new and previous Mums in mind.
Classes include:
- Physiotherapy
- Breastfeeding
- Baby bath
- Sleep and settle
- Preparation for home
- Questions and answers on anything
Visiting Hours
Delivery Suite
- Please advise your family and friends that no visiting is allowed whilst you are in the Delivery Suite.
- You may elect to have up to two support people with you during labour (your partner and one other). Please be advised that these two support people are not interchangeable during labour.
- Visitors are encouraged to visit only when you have been moved to the postnatal unit and within the visiting hours. Visitors outside of these visiting hours will be deterred.
Special Care Nursery
- Parents are welcome to visit or telephone at any time.
- Siblings and grandparents may visit between 2pm – 4.30pm and/or 6pm – 8pm.
- All other visitors will be restricted to viewing your baby through the window – if possible.
In order to respect and maintain the privacy of our newborns and their families we request no visiting ocurrs during our staff handover period:
* 6.30am to 7am* 1.30pm to 2pm* 9pm to 9.30pm
Postnatal Unit
- 2.30pm to 4pm and 6.30pm to 8pm, daily. All visitors will be deterred outside of these hours.
- A new mother’s rest period outside of these hours is imperative for their recovery phase so please avoid disappointment by planning your visit around these times, as exceptions will not be granted.
- Partners are welcome up till 8pm daily.
Going home with your baby
You may go home with your support person once your Obstetrician is satisfied with your progress. Vaginal delivery 4 days and a Caesarian section 5 days.
Those requesting to be discharged earlier will need to consult with their Obstetrician for approval.
Discharge time is strictly 10am to enable us to prepare the room for incoming admissions.
We are able to accommodate you in our discharge lounge should your transportation arrangement differ from our discharge time.
Please ensure your transport home has been fitted with a child safety seat.
Our nursing staff will provide you with a follow up appointment with your Obstetrician, your baby’s follow up appointment with the paediatrician and the contact details for your nearest early childhood centre.
Any post vaginal delivery / post caesarean instructions specific to you should be discussed with your Obstetrician or midwife prior to departing the ward.
Ensure you take all personal belongings, medications, x-rays and scans, flowers and discharge documents with you.
Approximately 6 weeks after your discharge you will receive a telephone call from one of our maternity staff members. This is a courtesy call to check on your progress and enquire about your care.
